Definition

Rig removal is the post-production process of reconstructing the photographed image after visible supports, wires, braces, control mechanisms or their shadows have been used to hold or move stop-motion subjects during exposure. It is not merely cosmetic paint-out. Reliable rig removal begins on the shooting stage, where the rig, camera move, lighting, clean plates and background coverage are planned so that post-production has enough image information to rebuild what the support obscured.

Overview

The useful way to think about rig removal is as a production bargain: the animator is allowed to use whatever physical support produces the best performance, and the camera/VFX plan accepts responsibility for making that support disappear later. David Vickery described this clearly on Aardman's *The Pirates!*: characters could jump, fly, balance and hang because the animation team was free to use exposed armatures, fine lines and multiple poseable rigs. One airship shot used separate supports across a chain of eight characters, while hard sunlight also projected rig shadows onto the set. The clean-up problem therefore included not only the metal itself but the image evidence created by it. This is why a rig that is easy to animate with can still be expensive to remove, and why rig design, lighting and post should be considered together rather than in sequence.

The strongest rig-removal setups preserve replacement information during photography. On *The Pirates!*, repeatable motorized camera moves allowed Aardman to shoot multiple passes, including clean plates, that aligned with animated passes. That is far more robust than assuming a single still background will solve every frame. A clean plate can supply the texture hidden behind a support, but the compositor must still account for changing shadows, moving props, depth relationships, stereo differences and any local surface variation. A stop-motion production can also photograph alternate passes or temporarily remove a rig when the geometry of the shot permits it. The goal is not one universal plate recipe; it is to leave post with a plausible source for every region that will be uncovered.

Large productions demonstrate how central this work can become. Animation World Network reported that LAIKA's *Missing Link* had more than 1,000 rigs removed by its VFX Paint team, while hundreds of shots also required seams clean-up, set extensions, effects or CG animation. LAIKA VFX supervisor Steve Emerson has described roto/paint work as covering not only external supports but also face seams, frame-to-frame chatter, colour fixes and eyelid enhancement. That broader context matters: once a frame enters clean-up, the craft is deciding what belongs to the photographed handmade performance and what is production apparatus. A technically spotless frame can still be wrong if the process removes useful texture, fingerprints, material variation or intentional irregularity that gives the miniature world its character.

For smaller productions, the same principles apply even if the tool is a clone brush rather than a dedicated paint department. The difficult cases are usually not the large obvious rig in front of a static wall; they are supports crossing textured or moving surfaces, cast shadows, contact areas where the puppet meets the rig, motion blur or depth-of-field changes, and camera moves that reveal new background. Planning the removal before animation lets the team choose rig positions, lighting angles and plate strategies that preserve the performance instead of forcing the animator to compromise movement simply to make cleanup easy. The best rig-removal workflow therefore treats post-production as an enabling part of stop-motion photography: it expands the poses and actions that can be photographed physically while keeping the final image visually coherent.

Workflow

  1. 1. Identify every support that will be visible or may cast a visible shadow before shooting. Mark difficult contact areas, reflective surfaces, moving background elements and camera moves that will reveal new parts of the set.
  2. 2. Choose the rig for animation quality first, then evaluate its removal cost. Where possible, keep supports away from high-detail edges, faces, hair, translucent materials and other regions that are expensive to reconstruct, without weakening the pose or performance.
  3. 3. Plan replacement imagery. Shoot clean plates, alternate passes or temporary rig-free frames wherever they provide reliable background information. For motion-control or stereo work, preserve camera repeatability and record which pass corresponds to which shot state.
  4. 4. Preserve registration and exposure continuity. Keep camera, focus, lighting and set state stable enough that the clean source can be aligned with the animated plate; when lighting or practical elements change, capture the additional reference needed instead of assuming one frozen plate will match.
  5. 5. Remove the rig in layers: first reconstruct the hidden background, then repair cast shadows, contact regions and residual edges. Track or animate masks and patches so they follow the photographed motion rather than floating independently of the set.
  6. 6. Review the cleaned shot in motion and in sequence context. Check for repeated texture, frozen grain, mismatched lighting, stereo inconsistencies, erased contact shadows and over-cleaning. The pass is complete when the support disappears without making the handmade image look artificially sterilized.
