Water is one of stop motion's hardest recurring subjects because it rarely behaves like a puppet. A production has to decide which evidence of water actually matters in a shot: silhouette, surface deformation, highlights, caustics, droplets, spray, reflections, contact with a character, or the scale of a whole sea. The works gathered here show that there is no single stop-motion solution to liquid.

Some productions fabricate water as controllable matter. Coraline uses replacement systems for water effects; ParaNorman combines replacement elements with reshapeable material; Bottle George separates liquid inside transparent glass from its larger ocean-of-alcohol imagery; and Wouldn't It Be Nice — Just Dance 2023 treats sea, river, waterfall, lake and wave as distinct production problems rather than one generic effect.

Other works solve the problem by changing what 'water' needs to mean. Fantastic Mr. Fox uses visibly artificial material substitution as part of its graphic world. Western Spaghetti turns an everyday material into boiling water through object metaphor. Bottle goes in the opposite direction and makes real water and outdoor conditions part of the animation environment. Kubo and the Two Strings and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio show the hybrid end of the spectrum, where digital simulation is deliberately art-directed to belong beside handmade puppets and sets.

This is intentionally a living collection. New examples should be added whenever SMDB finds a significant water expression, even before every production method is fully understood; method-specific claims still require production evidence before they are presented as fact in the Wiki.
