How Aardman lit the cramped submarine interior on Vengeance Most Fowl
Senior lighting camera operator Laura Howie describes lighting the submarine interior set on Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl by building the fixtures into the structure rather than around it: COB LED strips along perforated steel shelving throw light onto machinery below, small LED strips on wire behind the archway pick out characters and set detail, and several Osram Dragoneye spotlights split specific jobs -- one as Feathers McGraw's key light, three on the curved dome, one over the snooker table. Altman Ellipsoidal fixtures mounted to the back of the set light dials and screens without spill, and small practicals were wired directly into individual dials by Spark Dan Lewis. Front-fill was kept near zero because a 20mm lens sat only centimetres from Feathers, where any real fill would have thrown the camera's own shadow into shot.
The set itself was built from modular, removable wall sections so animators could reach in, with each section's lights wired to switch off automatically for any plate shot with that wall pulled, keeping wall-on and wall-off VFX passes clean to composite. Colour carried story logic in a space with no real daylight source: fire red for the dome's sense of threat, marine blue across the machinery for an underwater read, neutral light on the characters so the puppets stand out, and a brighter wash on the snooker table for comic effect. This is exactly the kind of hands-on lighting-craft detail that disappears once a press cycle ends, so it has been folded into a new Wiki page, Lighting miniature interiors, as a worked example of lighting a fully enclosed puppet-scale set.
