Out of Words: puppet fabrication and durability behind the stop-motion co-op game
Out of Words, a stop-motion co-op adventure game featuring actor Samuel Barnett voicing its puppet protagonist Prince, is built with real photographed puppets rather than CG styled to look like stop motion. Puppet fabricator Sofie Kjaer described a four-year character-development cycle, choosing materials for durability against the thousands of hand-touches each puppet undergoes during animation -- the Prince puppet's jacket fabric was picked specifically to survive that handling. Animation director Danail Kraev animates frame by frame at what he calls a meditative, slow performance pace; director Johan Oettinger frames the whole production around the same handmade-authenticity principle that drives feature stop-motion: 'every pixel you see has been touched and made by human hands.'
