Tristan Oliver on lighting Save Ralph entirely from outside the set

Cinematographer Tristan Oliver describes the opening shot of the stop-motion short Save Ralph as lit with no fixtures on the set itself: "It's completely lit from the outside. There's nothing on the set. It's all light coming in." Oliver shot on a Canon EOS-1D X Mark II with, in his words, "a rather nice Canon lightweight cine zoom: 35 to 105mm, which, with a doubler, goes straight on" the body -- the same camera package reused from Isle of Dogs. The zoom lens caught the key light directly during the shot, producing an unplanned flare that Oliver credits with helping "cohere the lighting" rather than treating it as a fault to remove.
