A brickfilm is stop motion shot with a mass-produced construction-brick system and its companion minifigures instead of a bespoke sculpted puppet -- almost always LEGO -- so the animator's material constraint is a fixed catalogue of manufactured, modular parts rather than clay, foam latex, or a custom armature.

Overview

Brickfilm names a specific case of the stop-motion capture method: the "puppet" is not built but assembled, from an existing manufactured system of interlocking bricks and minifigures rather than a custom armature, sculpt, or cast. That constraint reframes problems familiar from puppet and object animation. Where a fabricator solves range of motion by designing a ball-and-socket armature, a brickfilmer works within a minifigure's stock joints -- a rotating neck, shoulders, and hips, with no independent finger or mouth articulation unless the animator kitbashes custom parts or printed face decals. Continuity between frames is often easier than with a free puppet, since bricks clutch together and a baseplate's stud grid can lock a figure's footing without a tie-down rig -- but the same rigidity limits the poses achievable before the illusion breaks.

The format predates the internet. The earliest known brickfilm, En rejse til manen (Journey to the Moon), was shot in 1973 by Danish brothers Lars and Henrik Hassing and shown to LEGO's own Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, who had a personal copy made for them. In 1989, Perth animator Lindsay Fleay's The Magic Portal shot LEGO stop motion on a Bolex 16mm camera alongside live action and plasticine, funded in part by the Australian Film Commission -- an early sign the technique could carry a hybrid production, not just a hobbyist demo. The name itself is younger: Jason Rowoldt coined "brickfilm" when he founded brickfilms.com in 2001, and LEGO backed the hobby directly with the Lego Studios line (2000), which bundled a camera and editing software so buyers could shoot brickfilms out of the box.

Today's practice runs on the same pipeline as the rest of this book, just at a different scale: Dragonframe for advanced capture, the lighter consumer app Stop Motion Studio at the hobbyist end, and After Effects for compositing, typically at 12, 15, or 24 fps. The field's basic animation unit is a stock walk cycle -- often built from as few as four frames -- rather than the freely posed stride a ball-and-socket puppet allows, because a minifigure's hip and shoulder joints simply don't offer that range.

This database catalogues brickfilms across a wide range of budget and audience, from Bricks in Motion (2016) and From the Ashes: A LEGO Star Wars Story (2021) to a short, viral piece like Lego Guy Accident (2022) -- though, as with much of the TMDB-sourced stop-motion listed here, their studio and format fields are still marked 'Research needed.' Workflow

  1. Assemble the cast and set from stock or custom-decorated brick parts -- the "puppet" comes from an existing modular system, not a bespoke sculpt or armature.
