Definition

Hand-crocheted wool or yarn used as the visible outer body of a stop-motion puppet, wrapped directly over a wire or metal armature so the finished character reads as a knitted object built around a skeleton -- distinct from wool or fur used only as hair/costume trim, and from the silicone or foam-latex skins used on most contemporary puppets.

Overview

Most stop-motion puppets hide their skeleton under a skin built to read as flesh: silicone, foam latex, or painted resin (see Skin materials). A crochet puppet skin hides the mechanism for a different reason -- not to disguise craft, but to make the material itself carry the story. An internal wire or metal armature is wrapped, stitch by stitch, in hand-crocheted wool, so the finished character reads as a knitted object built around a skeleton, not a body with knitting applied over it.

The clearest documented example is CNESST's workplace-psychological-health campaign "Hanging by a Thread" (2025), directed by Pierre Dalpe and Dale Hayward at Montreal's See Creature Animation for agency Cossette, with compositing by Rodeo FX. Crochet fabrication was led by Chason Yeboah with a team including Fataba Kakulatombo, Nana Korkor and Jasmine Carpenter (See Creature's own production credits). The spot's central character, an office worker named Harold, literally comes apart at the seams over the course of the film -- the wool is the whole conceit, not surface decoration. Facial performance is carried separately by a 3D-printed replacement-face system (see Replacement face systems), the same division of labour most silicone-skinned puppets use: a soft or fibrous body for weight and silhouette, a harder, more dimensionally stable material wherever the camera needs to read fine expression change.

According to See Creature co-director Dale Hayward's account of the production, presented in ACM SIGGRAPH's technical program, the unravelling effect was shot in-camera as layered exposures directly in Dragonframe -- described as a "frontlight/backlight" approach -- rather than keyed from a chroma background, with Rodeo FX compositing the layers frame by frame. This is currently a single-source technical claim (SIGGRAPH's own recap of the talk); a second, independent account of the same technique would strengthen it.

Crochet-as-skin is distinct from the more common use of wool and fibre catalogued under Hair materials, where wool, fur or feather dress a puppet's head or costume as an accent. Here the fibre is the entire visible body, load-bearing over the full armature rather than applied to one region.

Workflow

  1. Build an internal wire or metal armature sized and posable for the character, as with any puppet.
  2. Crochet each body segment in wool, tensioning the stitch so the fabric grips the armature underneath and holds a pose rather than sagging.
  3. Wrap and stitch the crocheted panels onto the armature so no bare metal shows at the joints.
  4. Fabricate a separate replacement-face system in a more dimensionally stable material (e.g. 3D-printed resin), since crocheted fibre cannot hold the fine, repeatable expression changes replacement animation needs.
  5. Where a shot needs an effect that would be hard to key from a chroma background -- such as the character's yarn visibly unravelling -- shoot layered exposures directly in-camera (front-lit and back-lit passes) rather than relying on a green screen.
  6. Hand the layered exposures to compositing for frame-accurate integration rather than a single-pass chroma key.
