Definition

Focus pulling in stop motion is the planned change of lens focus through an animated shot, divided across frames and coordinated with puppet blocking and camera movement. Because the subject, camera and focus distance can all change incrementally, a successful pull is not simply a live-action rack focus performed slowly: its focus points, timing and repeatability become part of the shot's frame-by-frame animation plan.

Overview

Focus is one of the few photographic variables that can behave like animation. A puppet walking toward camera changes its subject distance frame by frame; a tracking camera can change that distance even if the puppet barely moves. Frank Passingham's account of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio makes the production consequence explicit: when a camera move follows a character, the camera team has to know where the character will be, whether it moves nearer or farther from the lens, and where focus needs to change. He describes getting those focus points right as a collaboration with the animator, not a correction added after the blocking has already been fixed.

That makes focus planning a three-way contract between performance, camera path and lens. The animator needs room to shape the acting; the motion-control operator needs a repeatable spatial path; the camera team needs focus targets that remain believable as those two motions combine. Linda Hamblyn describes motion-control work at Aardman as including camera moves, focus motors and other moving equipment, with the larger purpose of making moves precise and repeatable. In stop motion, repeatability matters twice: the focus curve must return to the same position for every photographed pass, and it must still line up with a performance that may take days to complete.

Modern capture systems can automate part of this job, but automation does not remove the need to design the pull. Dragonframe documents direct focus stepping for supported electronic lenses and, in its newer motion-control feature history, programmable repeatable focus for compatible Canon Focus Point Memory camera/lens combinations. Those capabilities are useful because a focus value can be tied to the shot timeline rather than adjusted by hand from memory. They are also conditional: Dragonframe notes that manual lenses used through adapters generally cannot be driven by its focus controls. A production therefore has to decide early whether focus will be motorized, electronically controlled, mechanically indexed or intentionally locked.

The practical test is the sequence, not a focus chart. Passingham describes rough-programming a camera move, shooting it back and judging its cadence before committing the animation. Focus deserves the same treatment. A technically smooth curve can still feel wrong if it leads the performance, arrives after the dramatic beat, or shifts attention away from the intended subject. Conversely, holding focus can be stronger than pulling it when the shallow depth of field itself is not telling the story. The aim is not constant optical activity; it is to make focus changes read as part of the camera language while remaining deterministic enough for frame-by-frame production.

Workflow

  1. Block the character and camera path together. Mark the frames where the subject changes distance materially and identify the dramatic beats where attention should shift.
  2. Choose the focus-control method before animation: electronically controlled lens, motorized focus axis, mechanically indexed manual lens, or locked focus. Confirm that the chosen camera/lens combination can repeat the required positions.
  3. Program or mark a small set of focus targets against the shot timeline. Avoid adding control points merely to make the curve look smooth; each point should answer a spatial or storytelling need.
  4. Shoot a rough move before final animation. Review the camera path, puppet blocking and focus transition together at playback speed, checking whether the pull leads, follows or lands on the intended beat.
  5. During animation, preserve the approved focus program with the camera move and any repeat passes. If blocking changes enough to alter subject distance, treat that as a shot-plan change and retest rather than silently compensating frame by frame.
