Forced perspective for miniature sets

Definition
Forced perspective is the deliberate arrangement of camera position, subject distance and set scale so that objects appear larger, smaller, nearer or farther apart than their physical dimensions would imply. In miniature production it can extend a set, compress construction costs or join differently scaled elements, but the illusion is tied to a controlled viewpoint and must be tested with the final lens and camera path.
Overview
Perspective is produced by camera position. A lens changes how much of that perspective fits into the frame, but the relative apparent sizes of near and far objects come from where the camera is placed. Forced perspective exploits that fact by placing elements at different distances and scaling them so the camera sees a convincing relationship from its chosen vantage point. A building can narrow and shrink more rapidly than real architecture would, a foreground object can be oversized, or two separately scaled elements can be aligned so they read as one continuous environment.
Miniature cinematography makes the technique especially useful because physical depth is expensive. A set does not need to be architecturally correct outside the camera's view; it needs to produce the right image from the shot. ARRI's description of the Ultra Prime 8R notes that an extreme wide rectilinear lens can exaggerate depth and make small spaces appear larger, and specifically identifies miniatures as an application. That does not mean wide angle automatically creates forced perspective. It means lens choice, camera distance and set geometry can be designed together to increase the amount of apparent space produced by a limited physical build.
The cost of the illusion is a restricted viewing envelope. Once the camera translates far enough, foreground and background elements reveal their true separation through parallax. A static shot can therefore sustain a more aggressive perspective cheat than a long tracking move. If the shot moves, the set may need subtler scaling, moving pieces, motion-controlled elements or a composite strategy that preserves the intended relationship throughout the path. The camera path must be treated as part of the set design, not added after the forced-perspective geometry has been built.
The principle also clarifies a broader truth about miniature sets: the physical build is subordinate to the frame. Laura Howie's submarine work on Vengeance Most Fowl was not documented as a forced-perspective setup, so it should not be labelled one; it is useful here for the adjacent production logic. The set, smaller camera body and custom motion-control rig were all altered around a specific low travelling viewpoint. Forced perspective is the same camera-first logic taken one step further, intentionally changing the geometry itself to control apparent scale.
A 2024 diploma film from the Filmakademie Baden-Wurttemberg, Ferdinand Ehrhardt's Detlev (catalogued here as detlev), applies the same camera-first logic on a modest production budget. Directors of photography Sebastian Ganschow and Leoni Gora built a petrol-station forecourt at mixed scales so a single frame could read as a full-size parking lot without constructing one; Ehrhardt has said the production used only one green-screen shot in the entire film and treated forced perspective, like everything else, as an in-camera decision made on the physical set rather than fixed later in compositing. Detlev went on to win the Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis (Germany's national short-film award, the "golden Lola") in the animation category in 2025 -- a result that automatically qualifies it for Academy Award consideration -- plus the Audience Grand Prix for Stop Motion Animation at StopTrik 2025, evidence that a forced-perspective set built on a tight student budget can carry a full production rather than serving only as a one-off effects shot.
Workflow
- Define the exact viewpoint and framing that must carry the illusion. Establish the intended apparent size and distance relationships before final set construction.
- Block the camera position and choose the lens. Test field of view and camera distance together; do not try to solve perspective by focal length alone.
- Build a rough depth model with foreground, midground and background markers at their proposed scales. Photograph it from the final camera height and compare apparent proportions rather than real measurements.
- If the camera moves, test the complete path. Identify the point where parallax exposes the cheat and reduce the scaling difference, alter the path or plan moving/composited elements as needed.
- Lock focus strategy and depth of field. A forced-perspective relationship can fail if one plane is visibly out of focus in a way that contradicts the intended spatial continuity.
- Document the valid camera envelope and set geometry so later shots do not accidentally reuse the build from a viewpoint where the illusion no longer works.
