Definition

Animating on twos means holding each distinct stop-motion pose for two frames of the finished timeline instead of creating a new pose for every frame. At a 24 fps delivery rate, a movement animated entirely on twos contains 12 distinct posed states per second; on ones it contains 24. The important distinction is not playback speed but sampling density: the action occupies the same screen time, while the animator makes larger pose-to-pose changes less often.

Overview

On-twos is often described as a labour-saving shortcut, but production evidence shows that this is too simple. It is better understood as a shot-design choice that changes the temporal texture of the performance. Max Lang and Jan Lachauer said that *Room on the Broom* adopted twos after the supervising animator proposed it during a tight schedule. The directors approved the test because the cadence suited the film's design and look; Lachauer even noted that he was not sure it actually saved time. That distinction matters. A cadence can be retained because it gives the film the right visual rhythm even when the original reason for testing it was production speed.

The same two-frame hold can also be an aesthetic decision made deliberately against smoothness. For *Fantastic Mr. Fox*, puppet maker Peter Saunders described Wes Anderson as wanting the audience to notice the handmade stop-motion quality rather than pursuing the extremely smooth movement associated with contemporary feature work. Anderson chose twos so that poses were visibly held and the motion kept a slightly stepped character. In that case the reduced sampling was not an imperfection to hide; it was part of the film's visual language.

Ones and twos therefore do not have to be production-wide rules. Cinematographer Frank Passingham described *Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio* as normally animated on twos, but said lateral tracking shots at 4K could produce objectionable strobing at that cadence. For those shots, the animators were asked to work on ones. The useful lesson is that camera motion, subject speed, image resolution and screen motion all affect whether a two-frame hold remains comfortable. A cadence that looks stable in a locked camera close-up can become visibly coarse when the camera and character travel sideways together.

Experienced animators also use twos as a planning resolution even when the final pass is on ones. In a 2026 interview, animator Justin Rasch described a workflow of blocking on twos and then completing the final animation on ones. This separates two decisions that are easy to confuse: how densely the animator needs to sample the motion while finding poses, and how densely the finished shot needs to be photographed. Twos can make the pose structure easier to judge during blocking, while ones can later refine arcs, overlaps and fast actions without throwing away the underlying performance plan.

The practical rule is therefore not “twos are cheaper” or “ones are better.” Twos are a temporal sampling choice. They can reduce the number of unique poses, create a deliberately graphic or handmade rhythm, or provide an efficient blocking layer. They become a problem when the resulting displacement between photographed states is too large for the shot. The right cadence should be tested at playback speed with the actual camera move and subject motion, and it may change inside the same production when a shot's screen-space motion demands it.

Workflow

  1. Set the delivery frame rate first. For a 24 fps project, define clearly whether a planned section contains 24 distinct poses per second on ones or 12 distinct poses per second on twos; do not change the timeline speed to imitate the effect.
  2. Block the main poses and timing, then play the shot at delivery speed. Judge the visible displacement between successive unique poses rather than inspecting single frames in isolation.
  3. Test the planned camera move together with the subject. Lateral tracking, fast crossings and other large screen-space movements are the first candidates for switching from twos to ones if the image strobes or steps too strongly.
  4. Use mixed cadence when the shot requires it. A character can hold a pose across two frames while a fast-moving element, camera move or secondary action receives unique states on every frame, provided the capture plan keeps their timing aligned.
  5. If twos are used only for blocking, preserve the approved timing and key poses when adding the in-between states on ones. The refinement should increase sampling density without accidentally changing the action's duration or performance beats.
  6. Review the final motion at intended projection or display scale. A cadence that is acceptable in a small preview may reveal stronger strobing when viewed large, especially in high-resolution lateral movement.
