Definition

A stop-motion sub-type in which figures are built and photographed as flat, fully opaque black shapes rather than visible line drawings or printed cutouts, so the image reads as pure profile and light rather than surface detail. Descended from shadow puppetry and defined on film by Lotte Reiniger's multiplane "trick table" method.

Overview

Silhouette animation restricts cutout figures to pure, opaque black shape: no printed detail, no line work, no colour survives in the finished image, only the profile and the light behind it. That constraint makes silhouette design -- readable posture, a distinctive outline, hands and props that register as shape alone -- the whole of the character work, which is why the technique reads as a close relative of shadow puppetry rather than of drawn or printed cutout animation (see cutout-animation).

Lotte Reiniger built the technique's defining production system for Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed / The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926, catalogued here as the-adventures-of-prince-achmed): figures cut from thin sheets of black cardboard and lead, jointed with fine wire so a limb could be nudged a fraction of a degree between exposures, then laid flat on a glass-topped, multi-layered "trick table" lit from below so the cutout registered as a crisp black shape against separately adjustable background layers. Stacking those layers on separate sheets of glass let her rack focus and shift each layer's apparent depth independently of the others -- a working multiplane camera built years before Disney patented its own version. Prince Achmed took roughly three years to complete and stands as the oldest surviving animated feature film, released eleven years before Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).

The technique's roots run further back than cinema: Chinese shadow theatre staged jointed flat figures against a lit screen for centuries, and Reiniger's own work is explicitly indebted to that tradition rather than inventing silhouette performance from nothing -- her contribution was building a camera system precise enough to photograph it frame by frame at feature length.

The technique persists as a deliberate, citable homage rather than a historical curiosity. For Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), Framestore director Ben Hibon was asked to make the Tale of the Three Brothers sequence "in the vein of Lotte Reiniger," and merged that brief with his own interest in Chinese and Thai shadow play -- flat black silhouettes and projected shadows, staged against warm, candle-lit colour and a sepia paper-grain texture over the frame. The six-month, 32-artist sequence is a rare case of a purpose-built silhouette-animation homage inside an otherwise live-action studio feature, and confirms Reiniger's specific trick-table aesthetic -- not silhouette staging in general -- as the recognisable reference point.

Workflow

  1. Design each figure as a pure silhouette first: block in the pose in solid black and check it reads before adding any internal joint lines, since no surface detail will survive in the final shot.
  2. Cut the figure from thin black card, lead sheet, or another fully opaque material, separating it at the points that need to move independently -- shoulders, elbows, knees, jaw.
  3. Join the pieces with fine wire or thread loose enough to rotate under gentle finger pressure, matching Reiniger's cardboard-and-lead method.
  4. Lay the assembled figure on a lit glass surface (a "trick table"), with any background elements on separate glass layers above or below it so each can be lit, focused, or shifted independently.
  5. Expose the frame, nudge each joint a fraction of a degree or millimetre, and repeat -- registration against the glass, not the figure's edge detail, is what keeps the shape stable from frame to frame.
