Definition

In stop-motion, the subject is the physical thing whose position, shape or configuration is changed between exposures. The subject may be an articulated puppet, a clay figure, a constructed model or another movable object; what makes the result stop-motion is not the material itself but the frame-by-frame capture of those physical changes.

Overview

It is useful to separate **subject**, **material** and **technique** because they answer different production questions. A puppet is a subject; silicone or clay may be a material used to make it; puppet animation or clay animation describes how that physical subject is animated. This distinction becomes practical as soon as a production has to decide what must hold a pose, what may deform, what must survive repeated handling and what can be replaced between frames.

Character puppets are often engineered as layered systems rather than single objects. Aardman Academy’s current Stop Motion 1 training is built around a professionally engineered armature, while its Model Making Foundation course has students construct a simple wire armature before building outward with modelling materials. That internal support is what lets a character retain controlled poses from frame to frame. The visible surface can then be chosen for a different purpose from the skeleton beneath it.

Aardman’s Thatchers Cider production is a clear example of that separation. The studio states that the commercial’s puppets had full armatures and were mostly cast in silicone because the material responded to light in the realistic way the filmmakers wanted. The two principal faces, however, were tracked and added later in CG rather than built as conventional replacement faces. The animated subject was therefore not defined by one material or even by one medium: a physical articulated body could remain the stop-motion subject while part of its final performance was completed digitally.

The same principle appears in animator training. Aardman’s Stop Motion 2 course supplies replacement mouth shapes, modelling clay, an armature head and eyes alongside performance exercises with props. These are not interchangeable labels for one technique; they are components that give different parts of the subject different kinds of control. Thinking in terms of the subject as a designed system helps explain why stop-motion fabrication, animation and post-production are tightly connected: the choices made inside the puppet or object determine what the animator can pose on set and what must be solved by replacement, rigging or later compositing.

Workflow

  1. 1. Define what must physically change between frames: whole-body position, jointed pose, surface shape, facial expression, interchangeable parts or a combination of these.
  2. 2. Choose a subject structure that can hold those changes reliably. For an articulated character this may mean a wire or engineered armature; for deformable work it may mean a material that can be reshaped directly.
  3. 3. Separate structural requirements from surface requirements. The internal support should preserve controllable poses, while the exterior material should serve the desired shape, texture and photographic response.
  4. 4. Decide which changes belong physically on the subject and which are better handled by replacement parts, rigs or post-production. Record that boundary before animation begins so fabrication and shooting do not solve the same problem twice.
  5. 5. Test the completed subject under the actual camera, lighting and performance demands. A subject is production-ready only when it can be manipulated repeatedly without losing the pose control, surface behaviour or registration the shot requires.
