How stop-motion animators plan a performance despite the medium's straight-ahead constraint: because a shot photographs one physical state after another with no way to revise timing once frames are exposed, animators substitute key-pose judgment, physical arc-tracking and, in at least one documented production, a live-action reference pass filmed before any puppet work begins.

### The constraint: no revising timing after the fact
Stop motion is inherently a straight-ahead medium: the animator commits to a physical position, exposes the frame, and moves on. There is no way to lock a start and end pose and generate the timing between them afterward, the way a drawn or CG animator can revise an in-between pass without reshooting anything already finished. Stop-motion animator and educator Ken A. Priebe, writing in *The Advanced Art of Stop-Motion Animation*, states the constraint plainly: the medium "is all done straight ahead, with no chance to go back and finesse the timing once it has been shot." Every micro-decision about where the puppet sits in space has to be right the first time, because the only way to change it is to reshoot the frame.
### Key poses survive the constraint, but the method changes
That does not make key-pose thinking useless, only harder to apply. Priebe argues animators should still decide "which poses the audience really needs to see" before shooting begins, then bias the frame-by-frame spacing so the puppet lingers, in held or slowly changing positions, around those chosen moments rather than treating every frame as equally weighted. The complication is spatial rather than temporal: because a puppet moves through real three-dimensional space instead of along a drawn line on paper, Priebe notes it is "very difficult to gauge exactly where the path of action is," so animators mark and monitor the puppet's arc physically, frame by frame, to avoid the visible jitter that results from a limb drifting off its intended path. ### A production-scale answer: rehearsing the performance before touching a puppet
Aardman built a studio-level answer to the same problem for *Early Man* (2018): a live-action reference (LAV) pass, in which director Nick Park films himself performing every shot before an animator ever touches the puppet. Animation supervisors Merlin Crossingham and Will Becher describe the LAV stage as a rehearsal in which voice performance shapes the physical action -- "how the characters look, how they stand and walk... what techniques can be used to create great dialogue," in Becher's words -- effectively key-pose planning acted out in real time rather than sketched. The reference is explicitly a starting point, not a template to copy frame for frame: animators, Becher says, "will need to embellish and take ownership of the performance in the shot." The cost of getting this planning wrong is measured in weeks: on *Early Man*, animator Steve Cox spent 7.5 weeks on a single massage-scene shot to produce roughly half a second of finished screen time, with around 40 animation sets running in parallel across the production, each under one animator's control.
### The digital-era version of the same instinct
Dragonframe's guide-layers panel -- which can hold an external reference still or video against the live camera feed so an animator can match a target pose before pressing the capture key -- answers a narrower version of the same problem: matching a single frame to a single reference image, rather than rehearsing an entire shot's performance in advance. Both rest on the same logic. Because so little can be corrected after a stop-motion frame is exposed, the craft rewards front-loading judgment before the frame is shot rather than after. Workflow
- 1. Record a live-action reference performance, or otherwise block out the shot's intended timing, before puppet work begins, so voice and physical intention are set first.
- 2. Identify which held or extreme poses in the shot the audience most needs to read clearly, and plan the frame-by-frame spacing to favor them.
- 3. Mark and monitor the puppet's physical arc through the shot as animation proceeds, since there is no drawn line to check the path against.
- 4. Animate straight ahead, frame by frame, treating any reference as a guide to embellish rather than a template to copy exactly, since nothing can be revised once a frame is shot.
