Definition
A system for anchoring a stop-motion puppet to the animation set between frames, preventing the figure from falling or shifting during shooting. Three main approaches: (1) Threaded tie-down: machine screws pass up through pre-drilled holes in the set floor and thread into tapped foot plates. Most stable, professional-production standard, but requires under-set access and time to drill and plug each position. (2) Magnetic tie-down: neodymium magnets embedded in puppet feet grip a steel shooting surface below a raised stage. Faster to reposition, leaves no visible holes, but magnets are fragile, feet must be large enough to carry the magnets, and a metal platform stage is required. (3) Pin-down: map pins or fine pegs push through foam-board or soft stage surfaces. Cheapest and fastest, but least stable and only suitable for very lightweight student puppets. Set construction must account for the chosen tie-down system before shooting begins.
Overview
A tie-down choice is a pre-production decision, not a shooting-day fix: the set has to be physically built around it. A stage meant for pin-down needs three or more layers of foam-board or corrugated card so a pin has enough material to grip; a stage meant for threaded tie-down needs open underside access so a crew member can reach up with a wing nut at every planned puppet position; a stage meant for magnetic tie-down needs a raised, thin floor with a steel plate running underneath the finished dressing, since the magnet has to reach a puppet's feet through the surface (see miniature-set). Committing to a system after the set is built means retrofitting all three of those constraints at once.
Threaded and magnetic tie-down trade the same two costs against each other in opposite directions. Threaded is the more dependable of the two for a heavy puppet and the cheaper hardware, but every hole has to be drilled, plugged after the shot (physically or in post), and re-drilled if the puppet's mark changes -- a labour cost repeated at every camera position. Magnetic tie-down removes that labour: repositioning a puppet is as fast as lifting and setting it down, and the floor is left clean. The cost moves to the puppet and the crew instead -- feet need enough surface area to hold a reliable magnetic grip, the magnets themselves are brittle enough to shatter under a knock, and handling strong stage magnets around a working set is a recognised pinching hazard. Pin-down avoids both sets of costs but at the price of holding power, which keeps it to lightweight puppets and student or hobbyist rigs rather than a hero puppet on a professional set.
Animation Toolkit LTD's officially licensed "Aardman Armatures Stage" is a concrete example of a modern tie-down surface built to avoid choosing between the two production-grade systems: a portable MDF platform (roughly 59.4 x 42 x 30cm) topped with a 1mm perforated steel sheet that accepts both magnetic tie-down, for steel-footed puppets, and threaded tie-down up to M5 thread, through the same perforations -- and collapses into an A2 folio case for storage. It documents the hardware two of the three systems above actually run on; it is not, on its own, a record of which system a specific Aardman or LAIKA production used scene-by-scene, which remains an open research question below.
Workflow
- Decide the tie-down system during pre-production, before the stage is built -- the set's floor construction depends on which one is chosen.
- For magnetic tie-down, build the stage on a raised, thin floor with a steel plate integrated beneath the surface dressing, and confirm the puppet's feet are large enough for a dependable magnetic grip.
- For threaded tie-down, build the stage with open underside access so bolts can be driven and removed at every planned puppet position, and budget time in the shooting and post schedules for hole plugging or digital removal.
- For pin-down, build the stage from foam-board or corrugated card in three or more layers so a pin has enough material to hold, and reserve the method for lightweight puppets only.
- If the production needs both heavier hero puppets and lightweight background puppets on one set, consider a perforated steel-topped stage (magnetic + threaded on the same surface) rather than building two separate stage types.
